Bottoms Up

Fall is my favorite season. I love the softer light and cooler temperatures. And of course, the sensational fashions. This season it’s an evolution of previous trends. You’ll see some new twists and some old friends, all done in fabrics to keep you warm and glamorous.

In a Kay Thompson moment, pencil skirts have returned to fashion. I toppled over once trying to get on a bus in a mid calf version, so check your range of movement before purchasing. Just below the knee is flattering and comfortable.

There is always something so refreshingly “We’re going to do this my way, thank you very much” about menswear inspired trousers for women. Look for a fuller leg in tweed this season.

Tights are an easy and inexpensive way to update your wardrobe. Patterns a big trend right now and you can pull them in with a pair of stockings. Wear them with skirts and dresses you already own for instant “fall 08″ style.

By a Neck

It’s finally fall! Of course, for those of us in California that means a rise in temperatures as we get our second summer. If the thought of wearing your wool clothes makes you itch, embrace the statement necklace. It screams style without breaking a sweat.

This makes me think of a flapper that was feeling her martini while she was getting dressed. The asymmetry of the beads and layering of the strands gives it a carefree-rushing-to-something-fun element that makes it just right for black tie and Sunday brunch.

Demure, refined and sparkly. Glass stones mimic fall colors, but are much more flattering (and packable) than a forest of maple trees. Wear it to accentuate the ladylikeness of a sweater set or to spruce up a basic T-shirt.

There’s a little Cleopatra in all of us. To show her off, keep the rest of your outfit simple- she wore togas and massive jewelry, remember? Let the necklace speak for itself and pair it with everything from black crewnecks to white button downs.
