The Getaway Bag

| Call it cabin fever. Call it wanderlust. Call it whatever you’d like, but hold our calls because we’ll be out of town for the weekend. Just the weekend. Two, maybe three nights, max. You don’t need your giant reinventing-yourself-for-six-weeks- in-Europe bag. You just need a bag that will fit a couple of outfits and maybe a second pair of shoes. If you keep it stocked with travel basics like toiletries and dainties, you’ll be ready to escape at a moment’s notice.

First Class  There is always a decadent, old Hollywood vibe to leather luggage. But, since customs agents are familiar with classic movies plots involving stolen jewels and laundered money concealed in leather bags, it’s not the best for traveling incognito overseas. It is perfect for a weekend getaway where neither it, nor the goods inside, will be out of your sight.

Fly Girl  I’ve always wanted to show up at the airport, buy a ticket for the next departing flight and figure things out once I arrive at my destination. I can use a handbag inspired weekender as my purse, but still have room for whatever purchases my spontaneous adventure may require.

On the Road  Thinking about a few snowy days in an Alpine cabin? Or you could skip the icy roads, head to wine country and turn the air conditioning down low enough to use your in-room fireplace. Either way you can keep your clothes warm all weekend in a quilted travel tote.

Rainy Day Style

It’s raining, it’s pouring.
Winter fashions we’re scoring.
| I’ve had it with winter! I’m tired of the cold, the rain, the runny noses and the grey-ness of January. If I could boycott the weather I would. Instead, it looks like we’ll have to out dress the winter blahs. Here are three ways to brighten up and put a little spring in your step.

Sheltering Sky  Feel like you have a black cloud hanging over your head? Maybe it’s just your umbrella. Swap out a black bumbershoot with a brightly patterned brolly for instant cheer on a rainy day.

Glove Yourself  Present your transit pass with panache in vivid gloves. Since they will mostly be seen against your coat, pick a tropical color that dramatically contrasts with it, like lime or banana gloves with a black or navy coat.

Splish Splash  Tuck your work shoes into your bag and wear galoshes for the commute. They’ll keep your legs dry and let you jump in puddles on the way home.

Work Out Chic

| It’s the season of gym memberships and renewed commitments to exercise regularly. Cute workout clothes may be just the things to keep you motivated after an hour of ouch-asana yoga poses. These pieces are chic in and out of spin class, so even if you don’t look forward to your 6 a.m. workout, you can at least look stylish.

Printed  Wear a half-zip warm up top over a sports bra for a run on the treadmill or a brisk walk with a friend. A fun pattern makes it seem more like street clothes and less like gym clothes.

Supported  Today it’s the stair master, tomorrow the Eifel Tower in a tank with built in support. These are great for working out while traveling, since they’re two products in one.

Covered  Boot-cut workout pants are perfect for curling free weights or lugging groceries. When you try them on, make sure you can bend and squat in them without exposing too much of yourself.
